Ülevaade
Uurimisrühm moodustati instituudis 1970ndatel eesmärgiga kasutada isotoop-geokeemilisi analüüsimeetodeid ja -indikaatoreid globaalsete kliima- ja keskkonnamuutuste uurimisel. Rühma uurimissuunad hõlmasid esmalt Kvaternaari jäätumiste ajaloo selgitamist ja polaaralade jääpuursüdamikes talletunud isotoopandmestiku dešifreerimist; seejärel ka Balti arteesiabasseini põhjavee päritolu ning numbriliste modelleerimise ning isotoopmeetodite kasutamise keskkonnauuringutes. Alates 2006. aastast tegeleb uurimisrühm CO2 kinnipüüdmise ja geoloogilise ladustamise temaatikaga ning viimastel aastatel ka vesiniku geoloogilise ladustamise võimaluste uuringutega.Jätkuvalt ollakse edukad isotoop-geokeemiliste andmete abil polaaralade paleokliima- ja keskkonnamuutuse rekonstrueerimisel, sealjuures osakonna stabiilsete isotoopide analüüsi laboratooriumi koostöö kaudu instituudi teiste osakondade ning partneritega Eestis ja välismaal. Töörühmal on teadustööks välja arendatud kaasaegne isotoop-geokeemiliste analüüside taristu, mille hulka kuuluvad kaks isotoopsuhte massispektromeetrit, vee isotoopanalüüsi laserspektromeeter, ning ioonkromatograaf.
