Overview
The main focus of the research of the laboratoryis valorization of environmental resources anddevelopment of new energy storage methods forenergy efficient environments. The goal is tofind sustainable alternatives for fossil resourcesbased polymeric materials by more efficient utilisation of biopolymers and recycled materials incommodity products and in specific fields.Innovative options for the sustainable recoveryof cellulose are being sought through the use ofnew, reusable solvent media, bio-based chemical modification reagents and energy-savingtechnologies. New, distillable ionic liquids areused as solvents. The use of plant oils for cellulose esterification is being studied and reactiveextrusion technology is being developed. Thelaboratory is the only one in Estonia capableof pilot production by electrospinning technology. To store electrical energy, the laboratorydevelops durable and flexible supercapacitors fordemanding applications, primarily in the spaceindustry. Nanofiber composites containing various polymers, carbon allotropes and ionic liquidsare used for this purpose. The electrospinning technology is also applied fordeveloping filter materials based on cellulose derivatives and containing antiviral agents, whichprolong their life and make them carbon neutral. The laboratory has a unique pilot productioncapability in Estonia in such important areas ofpolymer / plastics technology as compounding, extrusion and injection molding. Compositesof thermoplastic and thermosetting polymerswith inorganic or bio-based additives are beingdeveloped for the efficient use of secondary rawmaterials in the circular economy.Properties of textile fibres obtained by differentrecycling methods are being explored and theirsuitability for manufacturing different types of(textile) materials is being studied. Producingnonwoven materials with recycled textile fibresand thermoplastic virgin fibres is the mainmethod explored. The laboratory also developsdurable and sustainable textile and clothingmaterials.
